This research (in form of infographic) investigates the connections between the emotionally durable design
design approach and the wabi sabi aesthetic philosophy of Japan. A similar emphasis on the value of imperfection, simplicity, and longevity in design can be found in both wabi sabi and emotionally durable design. They both promote moving away from the throwaway mentality that permeates contemporary consumer culture and in favor of
a more sustainable and thoughtful method of consumption and production.
The hypothesis illustrates how
the concepts of wabi sabi and
emotionally durable design
can be utilized in the design of consumer products, using supporting concepts like
emotional design and circular economy. It demonstrates how making products that can be repaired and modified over time, using sustainable materials, and celebrating natural variations & flaws can produce items that are not only lovely and meaningful
but also environmentally and socially responsible.
